Can a solar flare damage your electronics?

In theory your personal electronics could be fried by a solar flare in exactly the same way, but it's more likely that it will be damaged by an uncontrolled power surge in the grid caused by the flare. If solar flares are so dangerous to our technology in space, why aren't our satellites failing every time a big flare hits?

In my understanding the major problem with solar flares are the (near) DC currents that get induced in power lines (phone lines have DC blocks, so that's not a problem). Since both ends of a power transmission line are terminated by a transformer, the DC current will induce a DC magnetization in the transformer cores.
